Every great project starts with a simple premise. For nbproductions—a scrappy freelancer trio of students, programmers, and filmmakers—it was a standard video production course at the Vienna University of Technology. Our goal? Complete the assignment. Our actual goal? Pour all of our chaotic, sleep-deprived creativity into a mockumentary that was purely, unabashedly fun for us to make.
We didn’t expect awards. We didn’t even expect recognition. We just wanted to make ourselves laugh. But when we uploaded the final cut to YouTube, the algorithm decided it was an absolute masterpiece. Almost overnight, our passion project hijacked the search engine throne. If anyone typed anything involving our university’s name into the search bar, there we were: Search Result #1.
For years, our joke accidentally became the unofficial digital face of the university. We held that top spot with an iron grip, standing as an unintentional monument to student creativity. How did our reign finally end? The university’s official videos eventually reclaimed the throne—whether through the mysterious magic of the YouTube algorithm creating the new “TU Wien” category in its search results, or perhaps a sudden, strategic bump in their marketing budget, we’ll never truly know.
